Founded in Milan in 1932 by Gio Ponti and Luigi Fontana, FontanaArte has been a cornerstone of Italian design since its beginnings, specializing in glass processing and the production of lamps and furnishing accessories. The aim was to offer architects, artists and decorators the opportunity to experiment with the potential of glass as a means of artistic expression: thus was born the union of art and industry that still defines the brand today.
Over time, FontanaArte has collaborated with emblematic figures of Italian design: Pietro Chiesa, Max Ingrand, Gae Aulenti, Piero Castiglioni, Renzo Piano and many others, generating objects that have become true icons, such as Gio Ponti’s “Bilia" lamp (1932) or Aulenti’s "Tavolo con Ruote" (1980).
In 1998 the brand received the Compasso d'Oro Career Award from ADI, recognition of the brand's historical and cultural importance in the Italian design landscape.
In 2024 FontanaArte became part of the Nemo Group, creating synergies among historic Italian design brands, such as Driade, under a new strategic management.
The Three Sixty lamp, a unique and historic piece from FontanaArte’s production, has accompanied Carlo Orsi around the world.
The photographs are published in the book La luce della terra. Fotografie di Carlo Orsi, released by Skira in 2007.
